The World Health Organisation has classed radio-frequency electromagnetic fields as possibly carcinogenic for humans 04/07/2011
|
The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), a part of the World Health Organisation (WHO), presented a report on May 31, 2011 classifying radio-frequency electromagnetic fields as possibly carcinogenic for humans. That classification was based upon the increased risk of glioma (a type of malignant brain tumour) associated with the use of wireless telephones.
Although research is still being carried out, the results to date are significant enough to give those fields a classification of 2B (possibly carcinogenic for humans). Given the potential consequences for public health, the IARC considers that further long-term research should be made into the excessive use of mobile telephones. Until the results of those studies are available, it will be important to take reasonable measures to reduce exposure from that type of device.
